Dickson Poon Undergraduate Scholars Welcomed to King's
The Dickson Poon School of Law has formally welcomed 22 undergraduate scholarship holders to King’s at a reception held on 10 October.
The scholarships have been awarded as part of Mr Dickson Poon’s generous £20million programme of donation to the School.
Professor Timothy Macklem, Head of School, said the evening was an important landmark, demonstrating Mr Poon’s gift as an investment in people, activities and opportunities. He said: ‘We are counting on you to use the financial freedom created by the scholarships to learn and to grow and to share those things with one another and in time, with the world at large. That is the goal to which a transnational law school, underpinned by philanthropy, ready to be second-to-none, must aspire.’
The Principal, Professor Sir Richard Trainor, attended the reception to welcome the scholars on behalf of the College and presented them with specially-made silver ‘Reggie the Lion’ pins, to be worn only by Dickson Poon scholars. Reggie the Lion is the student mascot for students across King’s.
Scholarship holders were awarded £18,000 to contribute towards their education expenses. Among the 22 scholars was Elaine Zhou who said she had been concerned that she would have to work part-time while pursuing her law degree. Speaking of the value of her scholarship she said: ‘Now I can focus on my studies.’
Another scholarship holder, Rachel Feldman, said: ‘I was thrilled to be coming to King’s in the first place, so it was a real boost to be a scholarship recipient.’
The Dickson Poon undergraduate scholarships will be available for the 2013-14 academic year. Details of how to apply will be available on the website in the coming weeks.
