Queen's Birthday Honours 2016
A number of staff from across King’s College London and King’s Health Partners have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this year.
Professor Sir John Strang received a Knighthood for services to medicine, addiction and public health. Professor Strang is Head of the Addictions Department in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) and is also Leader of the Addictions Clinical Academic Group of King's Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre. He has chaired or served on key committees and guidelines groups for the Department of Health, NICE and the World Health Organisation.
Professor Peter McGuffin, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatric Genetics, was awarded a CBE for services to biomedical research and psychiatric genetics. Professor McGuffin is a clinical psychiatrist whose research background and training is in the genetics of common disorders and behaviours. In late 2013, he retired from his post as honorary consultant psychiatrist in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust's Affective Disorders Service and became an Emeritus Professor at the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at the IoPPN.
Professor Jane Sandall, Professor of Social Science and Women's Health, received an CBE for services to midwifery and women's health. She has a clinical background in nursing, health visiting and midwifery. In the NIHR King's Patient Safety and Service Quality Research Centre, Professor Sandall has lead research into innovations in service quality and health technologies. She is also one of the academic leads for the King’s Centre for Implementation Science, and leads capacity building in NIHR CLAHRC South London.
Dr Ingrid Wolfe, Clinical Senior Lecturer at King's and consultant in children's public health medicine at Evelina London Children's Hospital, received an OBE for services to child health and care. As Director of the Evelina London Child Health Partnership, (Children and Young People's Health Partnership, across Lambeth and Southwark), she leads the development and evaluation of a new model of children’s everyday healthcare in South London. Dr Wolfe chairs the British Association for Child and Adolescent Public Health, working with the Faculty of Public Health and Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health on advocacy and policy.
Professor Alice Rogers, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and a Governer of the King's College London Mathematics School, was awarded an OBE for services to mathematics education and higher education. A former Head of Department at King's, more recently she has been involved in national education policy as a member of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education.
Julie Devonshire, Director of the Entrepreneurship Institute, was awarded an OBE recognising her service to entrepreneurship. Since starting this role in October of 2015, Ms Devonshire has helped to broaden the activities and services that the Institute offers to students, staff, and alumni. Prior to joining King’s, she served as the Director of Ventures at UnLtd, where she supported social entrepreneurs in the UK to start better and scale. She is also an award-winning social entrepreneur, leading the One Foundation as its CEO.
Professor Ivan Eisler, Emeritus Professor of Family Psychology and Family Therapy, from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinical Academic Group in the IoPPN, received an OBE for services to family therapy. His research interests include the evaluation of psychological treatments particularly for eating disorders, substance misuse, depression and self-harm. His other areas of interest are family therapy, family interaction research and attachment.
Dr Miranda Lomer, Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Diabetes & Nutritional Sciences Division, was awarded an MBE for services to dietetics and gastroenterology. Dr Lomer is a Senior Consultant Dietitian in Gastroenterology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She is a leader in the dietary management of functional bowel disorders and inflammatory bowel disease and has published British Dietetic Association guidelines for these conditions. Dr Lomer leads an educational course for dietitians on the low FODMAP diet and has trained over 800 dietitians in this successful dietary treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.
Dr Peter Hindley, Consultant in child and adolescent mental health at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and recently retired from the IoPPN, received an MBE for services to children and young people's mental health.
