Christoph Meyer comments on German elections

Christoph Meyer, Professor of European & International Politics and Head of European & International Studies appeared as an invited expert on CNN’s live coverage of the German election results on the 22 September. He analysed the elections results, pointing out that despite the overwhelming victory for the CDU/CSU under Merkel, the old and new Chancellor would not be able to do as she pleases. Not only would she need a new potentially more difficult coalition partner, but would also have to rely on cooperation for many of the most significant new laws with the SPD-led Länder government. About 40 percent of all news laws in Germany require the assent of the upper chapter, the German Bundesrat (Federal Council).
