Students explore leap from academia to action

How can students find a job in policy and influence social change? These questions will be explored at an event conceived and run by postgraduate students at the School of Education, Communication & Society, entitled From academia to action: how to get a job and change the world.

A panel of expert speakers including María Alejandra Andrade of Tearfund and Professor Meg Maguire of King's College London will give insights into the world of policy influencing and give respond to questions from an audiences of students looking to work in this field.

“We felt that more support was needed for students like us looking to apply our studies to the outside world. With help, King’s students can go on to make a huge difference to society by working in government, policy, NGOs and think tanks. We hope this event will contain valuable insights for students from King’s aiming to develop a career in these fields,” said Felicia Reynolds, MA Education, Policy & Society, co-organising the event.

“Academic research is being widely applied to policy-making for the wider benefit of society. This is also a conversation about how students and researchers can use academic research and insights to deliver such real-world change.” added Erin Pohl, MA English in Education.

Dr Tania de st Croix, Lecturer in the Sociology of Youth and Childhood at the School of Education, Communication & Society, is overseeing and supporting the initiative. The students involved are (in alphabetical order)Alizeh Hameed, Carolina Labastida Villa, Erin Pohl, Felicia Reynolds, Hyun Ju (Ellie) Lee, Pierre Gunsett, Charles Scott.

The event will be held on Wednesday 19 July, 5-8pm, in Waterloo Bridge Wing, King’s College London. Contact ecs@kcl.ac.uk if you are interested in attending.
