King's Awards Shortlist - Research Project of the Year
Congratulations to the two teams from the Dental Institute who were included as part of the shortlist for the King's Awards.
The King’s Awards celebrate outstanding achievements of staff and alumni. The winners will be selected by the Judging Panel, chaired by the President & Principal of King’s College London, Professor Edward Byrne.
The Biophotonics Research Group, a multidisciplinary team of clinical and non-clinical researchers, was shortlisted for the King’s Award for the Research Project of the Year 2016. In collaboration, Dr Richard Cook, Dr Frederic Festy, Professor Tim Watson and Dr Neveen Hosney developed a new imaging device to diagnose oral cancer early and in a non-invasive manner. The Microvascular Scope is a simple, portable device that takes advantage of the body’s early response to the developing tumour – the growth of blood vessels – and images their formation at very high resolution. This simple and cost-effective device may change the way clinicians detect oral cancer and in future reduce the need for biopsies.

In addition, Julian Naglik’s team was highly commended for their research recently published in Nature on how fungal pathogens cause tissue damage of the mucosa.
The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony on the evening of Wednesday 23 November. Follow the details at https://internal.kcl.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2016/October/KingsAwards.aspx
Congratulations to both teams on their achievements.
