Professor Tim Newton awarded Distinguished Scientist Award by the IADR

Tim NewtonProfessor Tim Newton of King’s College London’s Dental Institute has been announced as the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health

Services Research.  This award, one of the highest honours bestowed by the IADR, recognises Professor Newton as a highly influential scientist in psychology as applied to dentistry and for his life-long achievements in the field.

“I am honoured to receive this award, which recognises work done not only by myself, but many colleagues at King’s College London,” says Professor Newton. “The Dental Institute has shown a strong commitment to the role of psychology in dentistry, with the appointment currently of five full time psychologists working across a broad range of research and clinical topics including anxiety management, pain management, behaviour change and adherence. This award recognises not only my contribution but that of my collaborators and the enormous support we receive from the Dental Institute”.

Tim Newton is Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry within the Population and Patient Health Division at King’s College’s Dental Institute. With more than 260 published papers in peer-reviewed, high level journals, he is interested in the role of psychological theory in understanding dental behaviours and the development of theory based interventions to enhance oral health through behaviour change. Professor Newton has contributed to the theoretical and methodological understanding of how behaviour is socially determined.

The Distinguished Scientist Awards are among the highest honours bestowed by the IADR. The prizes will be awarded at the IADR General Session & Exhibition in Seoul, Korea on June 22. Each year 17 Distinguished Scientist Awards are presented worldwide. In the 56 years of the awards to date, there have been a total of 29 UK recipients, of which 6 have been King’s College London awardees, including:
