Greek Play 2017: Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound

Following the tremendous success of the 2016 production of Alkestis, the Department of Classics is delighted to announce that the Greek Play in 2017 will be Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound, directed by Maria-Pia Aquilina.

A curious and provocative play, it is set in the distant mythological past, in which a tyrannical Zeus has freshly gained control over the cosmos. Prometheus, once a staunch supporter of Zeus, has turned rebel by allying himself with human-kind and preventing their total destruction at the hands of the universe’s new ruler – now he must face his punishment.

Excitingly, this will be the first time the Department has produced Prometheus Bound in the Greek Play’s 64-year history.

Prometheus Bound will be performed at the Greenwood Theatre from 8-10 February 2017. This will be the only Greek tragedy performed in the original language in the next academic year. Pre-show talks by eminent scholars will precede each evening performance, and a Greek Drama Day for schools and members of the public will take place on Thursday 9 February.
