Update on KEATS training

In September 2012 King’s is introducing a new e-learning platform called KEATS (King’s College E-learning And Teaching System). The new platform, which will replace Blackboard Vista, is being implemented in every School throughout the College. In the School of Arts & Humanities, the Technology Enhanced Learning team led by Ian Barrett and Andreas Konstantinidis successfully conducted 21 introductory training sessions, with the participation of more than 140 academic staff across all departments.

Topics discussed during the sessions included the college policy on using KEATS and the module migration process from Blackboard, as well as issues of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) and copyright. Moreover, participants had the opportunity to experience the new platform first-hand by practicing basic skills and getting accustomed to tasks and functionality that will soon become commonplace.

From the 140 participants, 97 completed an online questionnaire, providing valuable feedback on their training experience, system impressions and future e-learning practices. In general, most first-time VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) users found the system simple and efficient, while experienced Blackboard users commented on the intuitive, convenient and customizable interface.

More specifically, the majority of participants had no difficulty in following the training (80%) and by the end felt confident enough to use the KEATS system on their own (72%). On the topic of the coming academic year, most participants plan on enhancing their e-learning approach through KEATS, with new resources, activities and tools (61%). Regarding the use of specific tools, some are planning on using social media (17%), podcasts (19%), applications for smart-phones and tablets (29%), or videos (50%). 

Staff members interested in participating in future training sessions can book a place through the Skillsforge system. Currently, there are scheduled sessions on the 14th, 18th and 20th of September. Support will also be available inside KEATS, in the form of a dedicated course space hosting training documents, videos, templates and links to copyright-free resources.
