Contesting Authoritarianism: Critical Journalists in Russia and China
Description
This paper theorizes about such practices through a comparative study of critical journalists in China and Russia. Drawing on in-depth interviews and participant observation in the two countries, the paper presents two distinct types of boundary-spanning activity: within-the-system resistance, carried out in partnership with the state, and extraneous or defiant contestation deployed in opposition to the system.

Ties between China and several countries on the African continent stretch back to the founding years of The People's Republic of China. Over the years, China has invested heavily in the continent, sent peacekeeping missions to several African states and, recently, opened her first overseas military base in Djibouti. Drawing on his experience as a UN Mission Expert in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Professor Hongsheng SHENG will provide an overview of China's contributions to African security in the past - and talk about what potential the future holds.
