Dr David Hay, Reader in Higher Education at King's College London, discusses his ethnographic study of first year undergraduates' recipe-like 'practicals' in Pharmacology at King's. His findings show the virtues of attending to a different middle ground between the alternatives of learning skills and action versus learning theory.
