Residence Welfare Leads (RWLs) are voluntary workers who are either actively studying postgraduate students on an MA/MSc or PhD course, students undertaking a second undergraduate degree (having completed an undergraduate degree already), or full time or part time staff at King’s College London.
RWLs are recruited for their dedication and enthusiasm for helping others. They are specially trained to live in the halls and provide an out-of-hours on-call wellbeing support service to our resident students from 8pm to 6am on a rota basis, covering every day of the year. Being a Residences Welfare Lead in King’s Residences is an excellent opportunity for those wanting to get more involved with activities that directly impact student experience, as well as developing skills that will enrich their lives and CVs! This is a great opportunity for those looking to make a real difference to the students that would otherwise find life at university very hard.
Please see the role descriptions for all our available roles below:
Why apply?
King’s Residences provides our RWLs with designated accommodation rent and bills free. This is because living in the accommodation is a condition of service that the team must have for the proper performance of their duties.
In addition, RWLs receive extensive, accredited training at the start of their appointment in areas such as Mental Health First Aid, Suicide Intervention, First Aid at Work, Sexual Violence Awareness and many more. Being in the RWL team is like being a part of a large, supportive community - so this is a great chance to join a group of like-minded individuals who are all working together to make a positive difference to others.
Am I eligible to apply?
To be eligible to apply for an RWL position, you must be either:
- A full time, actively studying postgraduate student on an MA/MSc or PhD course at KCL, with enough course time left to cover the appointment period.
- A student actively studying either a full time second undergraduate degree or you are on the Graduate Entry Medicine programme with enough course time left to cover the appointment period.
- A full time or part time employee at King’s College London with enough contract time to cover the appointment period (1 August 2025 – 31 July 2026). Please note: staff at King’s Residences are not eligible to apply.
- Have the right to work in the UK
All applicants must hold the appropriate Right to Work documentation that covers your right to work legally in the UK from 1 August 2025. If you are an international student planning to study in the UK from September 2025 onwards, your VISA may not allow you to work in the country until 1 month before your course start date (which is usually around 27 August). This will omit the compulsory training period for role. In these circumstances, you will need to ensure you have alternative Right to Work documentation.
Please note: 3 of our Residences – Julian Markham House, Moonraker Point and Canada Water operate on 40-week contracts only. RWLs at these sites will be on a shortened agreement, ending 27 June 2026.
