Education Conference 2024

Education Conference 2024

Facing challenges, inspiring innovation.

Thursday 13 June 2024.

Bush House, Strand Campus.

The King's Education Conference is King's Academy's flagship event. This year’s conference will take place on Thursday 13 June 2024 at Bush House (Strand Campus) and will be a full day of workshops, presentations and networking activities. Registration for this event has now closed.

The Education Conference is intended to be an inclusive and welcoming space where staff from across King’s can come together to celebrate their successes and to share their ideas about teaching & learning. We are proud that previous conferences have included submissions from staff in diverse roles and departments and given many colleagues their first opportunity to speak at a conference.

Content will focus on four conference sub-themes:

  • Pedagogies of Care: Within this theme, colleagues will share their experience or ideas of educational practices that prioritize both staff and student wellbeing and that foster a culture of empathy and support. Within this theme, we hope to explore transformative strategies that go beyond traditional teaching methods, promoting holistic approaches that nurture the mental, emotional, and academic flourishing of the whole educational community.

  • The Future of Teaching and Learning: Within this theme, colleagues will share the needs, challenges or opportunities they identify – or anticipate - as driving future developments in Higher Education teaching and learning. These may be in education for sustainability, digital futures, internationalisation, or another lens in their educational context. Colleagues could set out the situation and what it implies for pedagogy, curriculum design, educational policy and/or learning environments. How should we respond to these developments and possibilities? Or what plans and projects are already underway?

  • Inclusive Education: University communities are growing and diversifying and, at the same time, pressures on our students are intensifying. Within this theme, colleagues will prompt and contribute to conversations about creating equitable and accessible learning environments, as we explore strategies and practices that celebrate diversity, accommodate varying needs, and promote the full participation of all learners.

  • Student Partnership, Voice & Experience: Within this category, colleagues will reflect on opportunities – potential or existing – for our student community to shape their own educational journeys, and to propose ways in which we can foster meaningful partnerships, amplify student voices, increase student agency, and enhance their learning experience through collaborative engagement and co-creation.

Content will be presented in three formats and up to six sessions will run concurrently:

  • Research or Scholarship Presentation [30-minute slot in total. Sharing a completed or partially completed educational research or scholarship practice or activity. This may include context of the practice or activity, pedagogies applied, implementation, outcomes and evaluation undertaken.

  • Workshop [1 hour slot in total]. Active learning session engaging participants in reflection or application to their own discipline or field.

  • Poster Presentation: Posters will be on open display from registration until lunch in the conference hub. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage in informal 1-1 or small-group discussions.

The full programme for the day has now been published and can be found here. Education Conference 2024 Programme

FAQs

The Education Conference 2024 is open to all King’s staff members. Students are also permitted to attend if they are presenting co-created or sponsored content. Registration is open until Friday 31 May 2024 but please note, registration may close early if venue capacity is reached sooner. Your place at the conference is confirmed once you receive an Outlook calendar invitation for the day.

King’s colleagues are invited to submit content until midday on Monday 29 April 2024. We particularly encourage submissions from staff who have not previously delivered content at a conference and there is an opportunity to indicate this on the submission form. Indicating this will ensure the panel take this into consideration when reviewing your submission and ensure that you are provided with developmental feedback which will help you with future abstract submissions. Student presentations are also welcome but must be co-presented or sponsored by a staff member, who must lead on submission.

The Education Conference 2024 is about sharing pedagogical content relevant to the current Higher Education or King’s landscape. Should you feel your content is relevant but does not relate to any of the four existing sub-themes, on the submission form there is an option to submit against a fifth option, ‘other’, where you’ll be asked to specify a theme.

Yes. Colleagues are welcome to submit more than one content proposal. This can be two separate formats for the same content (e.g. a workshop and a poster presentation) or a new proposal altogether. One form per proposal/ per format, should be submitted (e.g. this includes one for your workshop and one for your poster presentation of the same title).

Yes – submitting content does not automatically register you as a conference attendee. You must complete a registration form in addition.

Yes. If you plan to attend part of the day, you are still welcome to register for the conference. Please use the final question of the registration form to indicate if you only plan to attend part of the day.

If you would like to view the full form prior to beginning, you can view a static copy below (but please note, annotations on the static copy will not be accepted as proposals - all proposals are collected via the online form only).

Once the submission deadline passes (Monday 29 April 2024), all proposals will be reviewed by the Conference Committee who will revert with one of three decisions: accepted, accepted with revisions, declined. These decisions will be communicated on Tuesday 14 May. If your proposal is successful, this communication will also include details of your allocated timeslot and logistical information on presenting. You will have until Friday 24 May to accept your place.

If you have a question that wasn’t answered by our FAQs, please email kings-academy@kcl.ac.uk Please note, you may be waiting up to five working days for a response.
