Postgraduate study in Academic Psychiatry

The School of Academic Psychiatry teaches scientists and clinical practitioners. Each of its departments runs a variety of Masters courses and other training programmes. The School also hosts numerous conferences, events and public debates.

Uniquely the School has a special role in the post graduate training of doctors to become qualified psychiatrists, in partnership with allied NHS Trusts, but also by contributing to the medical curriculum at King’s College London, equipping all doctors with some knowledge and skills relevant to mental health.

Duration: One year full-time, two years part-time, September to September

King's College London's Addictions course provides postgraduate education in addictions, with a particular emphasis on recent biological, psychological and socio-environmental advances in the conceptualisation of drug use and addiction and its effective prevention. Your theoretical understanding of the subject will be positioned within the context of policy development, focusing on facilitating the transfer of knowledge and skills to the workplace.

Duration: One year full-time, September to September

Our Affective Disorders course has been created for a broad spectrum of students and mental health professionals who are interested in specialist training from world-class experts. You will study all aspects of affective disorders, ranging from their characterisation and assessment to the challenges in treating these conditions. Our course is designed to be interdisciplinary and its focus is on both biological and psychological aspects. It is therefore suitable for students who seek to broaden their knowledge beyond professional boundaries, such as medicine and psychology.

This is a unique course for international and UK-based psychiatrists, paediatricians and psychologists, as well as allied professionals leading to enhanced clinical and research skills in child and adolescent mental health.

Our Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences course provides you with a holistic understanding of the aetiology and clinical management of neurodevelopmental disorders across the lifespan, with a particular emphasis on the adult population.

Our unique Early Intervention in Psychosis course provides world-class specialised training in the early identification and clinical treatment of psychosis, focusing on the detection and management of early symptoms.

Our Family Therapy Grad Cert course enables mental health professionals to develop useful theoretical knowledge and practise skills to enable them to work effectively with couples and families in the context of their own professional practice.

Our Organisational Psychiatry & Psychology course is unique in the UK and Europe. It draws on contemporary psychological, psychiatric and organisational theory to examine the causes, effects and consequences of mental ill health in the workplace and considers strategies and interventions to improve organisational and individual mental health.

The MSc in Psychiatric Research provides in-depth training in how to perform and evaluate research across the psychiatric disorders. Emphasis is placed on building excellent academic skills, independent thinking and an evidence-based scientific approach to mental health research. During the MSc, students develop a deep understanding of what is currently known about psychiatric disorders and their treatment and how well performed research can enhance knowledge and ultimately improve clinical outcomes.

Our MSc in War & Psychiatry will introduce you to ways of understanding how individuals, both members of the armed forces and civilians, prepare for and cope with psychological trauma. It is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required to explore the field of human conflict and its’ impact on health and wellbeing.
