Module description

This module explores a major topic in current music research, locates it in intellectual and disciplinary history, and gives students the opportunity to conduct independent research on or around the topic, which will usually arise from a current project in the department. In 2024-25 the module will focus on a specialised topic in music of the nineteenth century. 

Assessment details

  • 1500 word essay or equivalent (40%)
  • 2500 word essay or equivalent (60%)

Educational aims & objectives

This module aims to:

  • Provide a sophisticated understanding of a current topic in music research
  • Foster a high level of critical engagement with relevant theoretical frameworks and methodologies
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of the relevant scholarly literature.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 6 module and in particular will be able to demonstrate:

  • A sophisticated, detailed understanding of a current topic in music research
  • A critical understanding of and ability to evaluate the ways in which this topic is approached in scholarship
  • The ability to conduct independent research on or around the topic.

Teaching pattern

10 lectures and 10 seminars.
