Module description

This module explores topics in applied ethics and applied political philosophy, including philosophical issues concerning the impact of science and technology on human lives and societies. Topics selected for discussion may vary annually. 

Assessment details

Summative assessment: 1 x 3,000-word essay (100%)

Formative assessment: 1 x 2,500-word essay

Educational aims:

To gain familiarity with a variety of debates about how specific technologies or scientific theories affect human lives and societies.

To develop the capacity to grasp, analyse, and evaluate arguments and texts that deal with the ethics and politics of science and technology.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes:

An ability to think critically about debates and ideas on the ethical and political implications of science and technology.

A philosophical understanding of how science and technology change the ethical and political landscape of human lives and societies.

Teaching pattern

One one-hour weekly lecture and one one-hour weekly seminar over ten weeks.
