Module description

This module concentrates on advanced-level translation from French to English, working on a variety of literary and discursive writing including narrative, poetry, journalism and drama. Students will be introduced to specific translation techniques, and will develop their understanding of register, tone and style in both English and French. Alongside the weekly seminars for the module, there will be a series of talks given by professional translators and visiting speakers, which will enrich the understanding of translation practice in different contexts. Students will also participate in an online collaborative translation project with students from a university in France (subject to availability). 

Assessment details

  • One formative assessment in class
  • One take-home exercise and commentary: 20%
  • One collaborative translation and commentary: 20%
  • One 3 hour examination in period 2: 60%

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • gain understanding of advanced translation processes and techniques from French into English,
  • develop their understanding of various register, tone and style,
  • encounter professional translators in specially designed lectures delivered by professional translators,
  • have the opportunity to work collaboratively.
