This module will introduce students to a range of orchestration techniques from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The module will begin by outlining the basic principles of scoring for the different families of orchestral instruments. We will study this with particular reference to Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestration treatise. The module will be of use to composers, students who want to hone their skills in practical arrangements for use by ensembles with which they are involved, and anyone who would like to find out more about how ensemble and orchestral scores are put together.
