Orchestration

Module description

This module will introduce students to a range of orchestration techniques from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The module will begin by outlining the basic principles of scoring for the different families of orchestral instruments. We will study this with particular reference to Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestration treatise. We will then apply this knowledge to scoring for different types of ensemble, starting with chamber ensembles and moving onto the orchestra. We will also look at techniques for accompanying voices. The module will be of use to composers, students who want to hone their skills in practical arrangements for use by ensembles with which they are involved, and anyone who would like to find out more about how ensemble and orchestral scores are put together.

• Arrangement for orchestra (c. 3 minutes) (60%)    

Educational aims & objectives

• To provide students with the core technical skills required to arrange music for ensemble or orchestra;
• To provide an understanding of how orchestrational techniques have developed over the course of the last 200 years;
• To explore these ideas in relation to music within and without the tradition of Western art music.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 6 module. In particular, they will demonstrate:

• knowledge and understanding of orchestrational technique, how it developed over time and how it is still developing
• practical skills that help them in the workplace of professional classical music.
