Module description

This module introduces the methodological approaches and key concepts required to conduct research in selected areas of Jewish Studies. Students learn how to determine appropriate methods and approaches for the understanding, analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary material, and how to evaluate competing arguments and positions both orally and in independently executed written material. The module will include:

  • What is Jewish Studies?
  • Introduction to Modern and Contemporary Jewish Philosophy
  • Introduction to Jewish Ethics
  • Introduction to Halakhah
  • Introduction to Talmud: Law and Stories
  • Introduction to Halakhic and Aggadic Midrash
  • Jews in the Medieval WorldThe Emergence of Jewish and Western Modernity
  • From Zionism to Anti-Zionism
  • Religion as Culture - Culture as Religion? Secular and post-secular perspectives
  • Introduction to Hebrew Bible

Coursework

Two 3,000-word essays (50% each)
