Module description
This module introduces a range of theologically significant texts from the Christian tradition as resources for constructive and critical engagement with contemporary culture. Students are invited to reflect on their own cultural situatedness as students and members of wider society, and to do so in engagement with Christian writings from the past and present, bringing traditional Christian concerns and contemporary cultural concerns into critical dialogue with one another.
Typically, the module is structured around cultural 'buzzwords' such as 'inclusivity', 'tolerance', 'flexibility', 'growth', and so on. Typically, each session, under the heading of a particular buzzword, draws on a biblical passage and a Christian theological text in order to engage critically and constructively with the term and its contemporary usage. At the same time, the contemporary cultural context is critically and constructively brought to bear on the Christian theological text. Sample Christian writers include Augustine of Hippo, Julian of Norwich, Bonaventure, Martin Luther, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Willie James Jennings
