Module description
This module offers a novel thematic introduction to Islam to students with or without background knowledge of Islam by focusing on Muslim discussions on the idea of beauty over the centuries. The module takes students through various genres of Muslim writings from scripture to poetry to prose works in literature, philosophy, theology and mysticism (Sufism). Particular attention is paid to the ways in which Muslims understood God, the world and the human being as beautiful. Much of the module is spent unpacking Muslim interpretations of and elaborations on two foundational sayings on beauty in Islam: 'God is beautiful, and He loves beauty', which is a saying of Muhammad, and 'I was a Hidden Treasure and I loved to be recognized. So I created the creatures so that I may be recognized', which is attributed to God. Questions to be addressed over the course of the semester include: What makes anything or any person beautiful? What is ugliness? Why are there differences in people's perception of beauty and ugliness? Is pursuit of beauty an essential part of Muslim life? What is the relationship between love and beauty? Thus the module also explores epistemological, ontological, soteriological and ethical significance of beauty in Islam.
