Empirical research is vital to the generation of new insights and knowledge in the social sciences. Qualitative and quantitative research methods provide complementary perspectives for illuminating social problems and social injustices and providing insights into people’s lived experiences and individual and collective struggles. They are therefore invaluable tools for those advocating for social change.
This module provides students with training in quantitative and qualitative methodologies, as well as a critical understanding of how and why empirical research methods are used, their relative merits and limitations, and the ethical, political and cultural dimensions of social research. Students are introduced to the key features of data analysis, interpretation and research design within the social sciences. The quantitative element of the module focuses on supporting students’ understanding and application of statistical techniques by introducing students to statistical testing and the verification of hypotheses, as well as to techniques of data analysis including the use of computer software packages. Students will also be introduced to key qualitative methods of data generation, analysis and interpretation, again using computer software packages. Students will consider the significance of epistemological frameworks and research paradigms for research. The module is assessed by a combination of online quizzes and a research report that brings together students’ experiences of instrument design, data collection and analytical techniques.
King’s College London reviews the modules offered on a regular basis to provide up-to-date, innovative and relevant programmes of study. Therefore, modules offered may change. We suggest you keep an eye on the course finder on our website for updates.
