Sound in cinema is one of the most overlooked and under-researched areas in film and media production and studies. This module offers students an understanding of sound production, postproduction, and reception from both practical and theoretical perspectives. In the first section of the module, students learn the basic industrial principles in production and postproduction sound in preparation of designing a soundtrack for a fiction film (with a short critical evaluation). In the second section, the module continues to develop those skills students learned from the first half of the semester and mobilise these skills to support a film's narration. They also learn how sound reception is understood and theorised. In this half of the semester, students will work together in crews to produce five-minute short films or sound installations (digital or physical) (with short critical evaluations) as their final assessments. The aim of this module is to bring production and theory into a synthesis, and to apply this methodology to other areas in cinema ane media studies.
King’s College London reviews the modules offered on a regular basis to provide up-to-date, innovative and relevant programmes of study. Therefore, modules offered may change. We suggest you keep an eye on the course finder on our website for updates.
Please note that modules with a practical component will be capped due to educational requirements, which may mean that we cannot guarantee a place to all students who elect to study this module.
Please note that the module descriptions above are related to the current academic year and are subject to change.
