Module description

To familiarise the students with the principles and technology of optical communication systems, with emphasis on fibre-optic communications.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student should be able to

    1. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of optical communications systems theory
    2. Apply geometrical optics and EM wave theory to analyse and design optical fibres
    3. Demonstrate understanding and critical analysis of optical communications systems and their components
    4. Apply critical thinking and analysis skills to solve various problems related to the taught theory
    5. Solve problems on optical transmitters and receivers
    6. Demonstrate problem-solving, self-learning, and critical evaluation skills related to the design of optical communications systems.
