Module description
Syllabus:
Metric spaces, topological spaces, open and closed sets, compactness, contraction mapping theorem.
Prerequisites:
5CCM221A Real Analysis
You cannot take this module with 5CCM226A Metric Spaces and Topology
Assessment details
Written examination.
Exercises or quizzes will be set each week to be handed in the following week. These problems will be discussed in the tutorials and solutions will be available.
Educational aims & objectives
The aim of the module is to give theoretical foundation for key concepts appearing in Analysis: open sets, closed sets, compact sets, connected sets, continuous maps. This will be done in the context of metric and topological spaces.
Learning outcomes
Be able to perform simple theoretical analysis involving sets in metric and topological spaces and maps between these spaces. Be able to apply these concepts to other areas of mathematics.
Teaching pattern
Three hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial per week throughout the term
