Module description

This module will explore Wagner’s operas and ideas from the perspective of performance and reception in the nineteenth century and after. In the first part of the module, we will engage with Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger, Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal, exploring elements of these works in connection with Wagner’s theories of opera reform, and his project to construct a dedicated theatre in Bayreuth. In part two, we will address a series of junctures in the history of Wagner’s fraught legacy: from the political ideologies of the early twentieth century to developments in film and new media up to the present day. We will evaluate recent trends in Wagner studies, alongside relevant primary sources and influential works of criticism. Through an in-depth focus on Wagner’s reception across different historical periods and genres, we will encounter wider themes of operatic production and spectatorship; music and politics; and the place of music in multimedia.
