Module description

Language and Communication is one of the foundational, compulsory first year modules in the BA English Language and Linguistics degree. Language is so central to our everyday existence that we hardly notice it – it serves its purposes and we get on with our lives. But in fact language influences our lives in many different ways: as we fail to communicate; as we deal with a range of styles of language used by people in different walks of life; as we use language in a multi-ethnic society; and as we study and learn through the medium of language. In this module, we will look at the many functions with which language is used in discourse, and the use of non-verbal communication, as well as the ways in which humans are distinguished from other animal species in how well they use language.
