Module description

After two introductory lectures outlining the nature of Chinese philosophy and its relation to Chinese language, we will consider the following main philosophers and schools:

Confucius; Mozi; Mencius; Laozi and early Daoism; Neo-Mohism and the School of Names; Zhuangzi; Xunzi; Legalism.

Assessment details

Summative assessment: one 2,500-word essays (100%)

Formative Assessment: one 2,000-word essay

Teaching pattern

Please note that this module does not follow the standard teaching pattern of 1 lecture and 1 seminar per teaching week.

In weeks 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 there will be 2 lectures and 2 seminars in each of these weeks. There will be no teaching in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.
