Module description

This module will cover the history of the two states Israel and Judah in antiquity. In the module we will look at the sources for writing a history of ancient Israel and Judah as well as at how such histories have been written. Each session will have a historical period, event or particularly interesting question at its core. Students will need to prepare in advance the reading of some primary and some secondary material. We will discuss this material and come up with our own answer to questions as of historical interest.

Sample topics/questions:

  • Israel's (and Judah's) Ethnogenesis: Conquest, Peasant Revolt or nomadism?
  • Was there a United Monarchy under David and Solomon?
  • How was the relationship between Israel and Judah?
  • What happened to the Northern Kingdom of Israel after the Neo-Assyrians destroyed its capital Samaria?
  • Was the Land of Judah 'empty' during the period of the Babylonian Exile?
  • Was there a Return to Judah under the rule of the Persian King Cyrus?
  • How did Judah fare as the Persian province Yehud?
  • The Maccabaean crisis
