The primary aim of this course is to investigate, explore, and challenge critical responses to modernism’s supposed ‘inward turn’, in literature and the other arts. It is a wide ranging, interdisciplinary course which seeks to understand how modernist writers and critics – and those who came after them – have understood consciousness. What does the mind consist of? What is the relationship between literature and consciousness? And how have modernist authors attempted to represent the workings of the mind in fiction?
