Module description

This module will enable students to engage with a series of recent topics in Metaphysics.

The module in 2024-25 will be focused on necessity, possibility, impossibility, and essence.

Issues we might consider in the module include: What is the best metaphysical account of possibility and necessity? Should we understand possibility and necessity in terms of possible worlds? What are possible worlds? Should we admit the existence of impossible worlds as well as possible worlds? If so, what are impossible worlds? What is essence? Should we give an account of necessity in terms of essence? Or an account of essence in terms of necessity?

Assessment details

Summative assessment: 1 x 3,500-word essay (100%).

Formative assessment: 1 x 2,000–3,000-word essay

Teaching pattern

One weekly one-hour lecture and one weekly one-hour seminar.
