Investigating the industrial and creative contexts of cultural production is essential to gain a deep understanding of the media industries. This module takes students behind-the-scenes to uncover the often mysterious processes that guide creative content from idea to consumer. With examples and case-studies drawn from across the creative industries this module will equip students with the historical understanding and theoretical tools necessary for studying the complexities and contexts of media production.
This module aims to
Introduce students to key definitions and debates concerning the field of media production studies across the creative industries.
Outline key media production processes and industry structures and establish them in wider historical contexts, including mass-media and independent production.
Enable students to use and apply appropriate tools to critically analyse media production processes and cultures.
Encourage critical reflection on the social, political and cultural contexts of media production in local, national and transnational settings.
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate their ability to:
Understand the key definitions and debates around media production across a range of creative industries.
Understand key production processes and industry structures within wider historical contexts.
Apply appropriate analytical tools in the critical examination of media production processes and cultures.
Reflect critically on the ways in which media production is affected by a range of social, political and cultural factors in increasingly globalised media industries.
Lectures, 10 x 1 hour seminars
