Module description

This module provides the student with an introduction to inorganic chemistry, providing a knowledge and understanding of atomic and molecular structure, periodicity and reactivity of the inorganic elements. The basic concepts of inorganic chemistry will be introduced, such as reduction-oxidation, acid-base chemistry, and complexation chemistry.

You will build upon the entry-level knowledge covered in A-Level Chemistry and General Chemistry. Fundamental concepts in Inorganic Chemistry will be introduced which will be essential for the comprehension of modules later in the programme.

Assessment details

Written examinations and coursework.

Online quizzes (MCQ's) 30%

Educational aims & objectives

This module provides the student with an introduction to inorganic chemistry, providing a knowledge and understanding of atomic and molecular structure, periodicity and reactivity of the inorganic elements. The basic concepts of inorganic chemistry will be introduced, such as reduction-oxidation, acid-base chemistry, and complexation chemistry.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module students should be able to:

  • Understand the basics of structure and bonding of inorganic molecules.
  • Identify and explain the relationship between structure and reactivity (periodicity).
  • Be able to predict the shape a molecule will adopt using VSEPR.
  • Understand and explain the basics of molecular orbitals.
  • Understand and explain the basics of Crystal Field Stabilisation energy and how it can be used to predict whether a complex is high or low spin.

Indicative Syllabus

  • Properties of groups and their relationships
  • Chemistry of hydrogen
  • Acid/base and redox chemistry
  • Properties of the d-block
  • Crystal field theory
  • Kinetics and thermodynamics of inorganic reactions

Teaching pattern

31 hours of lectures, 6 hours workshops
