Module description

The module invites students to explore the idea of 'God' or the divine from multiple angles through representative texts from different religious traditions, which may typically include Christianity and Islam but are subject to change in line with staff availability each year. Students will reflect on how thinkers of different traditions and time periods explored similar and dissimilar sets of questions on God through close reading of primary sources in translation as well as key secondary sources.

  • To introduce students to diverse thinking on God across religious traditions
  • To familiarise students with key questions surrounding the idea of God
  • To familiarise students with representative theological texts

Generic skills

By the end of the module the student will be able to demonstrate a basic ability to:

  • analyse texts
  • summarise and present arguments
  • research, plan and present essays to specified deadlines

Module specific skills

By the end of the module the student will:

  • become familiar with various approaches to analysing and understanding 'God' across different religious traditions
  • become aware of closely related questions on 'God'
  • appreciate similarities and differences in speaking about God among different religious traditions
