Module description
The purpose of this module is to examine geopolitics from the perspective of decolonial and radical approaches. It explores geopolitics from ‘below’ as practiced and experienced by overlooked and non-traditional political actors.
The module takes as a starting point the need to look beyond traditional actors in international politics (from the powerful states in the global north, to the state itself) to understand geopolitics past and present. It begins by introducing alternative visions of global geopolitics from key thinkers outside of the traditional canon, before exploring different aspects of geopolitics from below (for example postcolonial and subaltern states in the global system, unrecognised states and diaspora communities as geopolitical actors, non-state institutions like charities and corporations as geopolitical actors, and ourselves as geopolitical actors). We will also explore alternative and decolonial methods for researching geopolitics ‘from below’.
