Module description

What is the module about?

The module aims to give students a sound basic understanding of the principles of individual employment law, together with an insight into the extent to which the law recognises the essentially “social” nature of the employment relationship. This will include an understanding of the growing influence of both human rights and, most crucially, European Union law on the domestic framework of employment.

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

  • distinguish between and evaluate the various sources of employment law;
  • understand the key principles of individual employment law;
  • apply skills of critical analysis and logical thought in dealing with legal materials;
  • identify the existence of potential legal issues in a given factual situation and apply relevant legal principles to the analysis of those issues;
  • to assess the impact of employment law on the exercise of managerial prerogatives
  • to evaluate the law’s effectiveness
  • to analyse changes in law

Who should do this module?

It develops critical skills, problem solving and communication skills. The operation of employment law is very important – whether you run your own business, are employed in one or are intending to work in human resource management.
