This module introduces students to key issues and concepts in the study of intercultural communication and cultural representations in Language Teaching. The module explores key concepts in intercultural communication within transnational and cosmopolitan paradigms and uses this theoretical knowledge to critically analyse language teaching materials.

Coursework 50% 1500 word assignment
Coursework 50% 10-minute presentation, e.g. narrated Powerpoint, podcast, etc.
Educational aims & objectives
This module introduces students to key issues and concepts in the study of intercultural communication and cultural representations in language teaching. Its main focus is on:
- intercultural competence
- current transnational and cosmopolitan paradigms to study cultural mediation
- skills and analytical framework to analyse language teaching
The theoretical knowledge introduced during the module is used to support students in critically analysing language teaching materials and textbooks.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will:
- Be able to develop an advanced and critical understanding of the key concepts and models used to study cultural diversity (e.g. in intercultural communication and intercultural education)
- Have gained a further understanding of what skilled intercultural communicators do
- Be able to reflect on their own (and others') culture and communicative behaviours
- Be aware of different approaches to 'culture' in language teaching education
- Be able to critically analyse representations of cultures in language teaching materials
