Module description

This module will teach you how to use (and misuse!) some important and interesting theory to illustrate patterns in data and draw sensible conclusions from it, as well as win arguments with your friends and enemies ...As well as learning about the theory and practice of statistics, you can also learn about some of the famous (and sometimes colourful) figures from the history of statistics - check out the section on Famous Statisticians.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics
  • visualise and analyse statistics of data using Matlab
  • demonstrate an understanding of the nature and types of programming languages, and perform simple programming tasks using Matlab.
