Module description

The module provides an in depth and comprehensive understanding of the operation of wealth management (private banking) at both an international as well as a United Kingdom specific context. The stages of wealth management – from information gathering on the client, to portfolio structuring, monitoring and review – will be examined in depth. Emphasis will be given on the use of different asset classes and investment vehicles in the portfolio construction process. Areas such as the regulatory framework, insurance products and trusts will also be covered.

Learning outcomes

On the successful completion of the module you should have gained:

  1. Understanding and critical use of the utilisation of asset classes on the construction of wealth portfolios.
  2. A deep and systematic understanding of the foundations of private portfolio at the stages of client information gathering and how this information can be “translated” into portfolio structuring guidelines
  3. Analysis and evaluation of secondary influences on portfolio decisions such as behavioural factors, ethical criteria and philanthropy
  4. Awareness of the principles that govern conduct in financial markets and familiarization with the concept of Treating Customers Fairly and Best Execution
  5. Critical assessment of portfolios and analysis of the most suitable benchmarks for the evaluation and appraisal of portfolios.

Teaching pattern

Across the semester teaching is expected to comprise of:

  • 20 hours of lectures 
  • 9 hours of tutorials

You will also be expected to spend time preparing for classes and working on the assessment tasks each week. The combined hours of classes and independent learning should equate to at least 15 hours a week.
