Module description

The module takes an ethical perspective(s) on issues of contemporary relevance, considering what ethical issues and dilemmas they raise. Such issues might include identity, offence, free speech and care for people and planet. The approach is multidisciplinary, and engages with texts by authors with different standpoints. It will help develop skills of ethical reflection and leadership.

Assessment details

For full year students: One 2-hour exam (100%)

For semester 1 only Study Abroad students:  3000 word essay (100%)

 

Educational aims & objectives

  1. Introduce Applied Ethics as a tradition and a discipline
  2. Offer a critical approach to Applied Ethics that is clear about which ‘issues’ are selected and what values are being applied
  3. Engage in reflection about what issues matter to us and why
  4. Gain experience in reflecting on issues, values and controversies that may be personal and deeply-felt
  5. Encourage empathetic understanding of different values.

Teaching pattern

One two-hour weekly class over ten weeks.
