Module description
Syllabus:
Basics of ODEs. Fourier series. PDEs, separation of variables.
Prerequisites:
A thorough knowledge of 4CCM112A Calculus II or equivalent. It will be helpful to attend 5CCM221A Real Analysis but is not essential.
Assessment details
Written examination.
Exercises or quizzes will be set each week to be handed in the following week. These problems will be discussed in the tutorials and solutions will be available.
Educational aims & objectives
The aim of the module is to introduce the basics of the theory of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE) and Partial Differential Equations (PDE) and discuss their applications in mathematics and physics.
Learning outcomes
Be able to solve simple ODE. Be able to solve simple PDE, such as heat and wave equations, in simple domains by the method of separation of variables.
Teaching pattern
Three hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial per week throughout the term
