A nation stood still: How King's shared expertise following the death of The Queen

As news broke on 8 September 2022 of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, academics from King's used their expertise to help share what this historic moment meant for the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the Monarchy itself.

In the 10 days following her death, news outlets around the world turned to our academics. Here is a selection of just some of the 616 pieces of media coverage, including 145 broadcast items and 29 print publication articles, that featured King's experts during this period.

Given her 70 year reign, Queen Elizabeth II was the only British monarch many had known. This led to questions following her death, which Professor Vernon Bogdanor, Research Professor at the Centre for British Politics and Government, was able to answer through interviews on her role and the constitution in The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Express, The New York Times and the International New York Times. He also appeared on BBC Radio 4's Any Questions and on BBC Radio 5 Live reflecting on The Queen’s life, plus he took part in an online event about her reign and legacy organised by the University of North Carolina in the USA.

He also spoke about the proclamation of the new King Charles III on BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 2, and Times Radio, plus discussed whether the new King could slim down the monarchy, and its role in contemporary society, in the Daily Express, The New York Times, The Sunday Telegraph and the Australian Financial Review

Professor Linda Woodhead, from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, spoke about The Queen’s faith and her as a leader of selfless values on BBC Radio 4's Sunday programme and PM.

"[In society] we've moved from a give your life ethic to a live your life ethic. The Queen stood solidly for the give your life[...] to selfless service, dedication and duty. Those values without her are rather orphaned."– Professor Linda Woodhead, Head of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies

Professor Ashley Jackson, Professor of Imperial and Military History, was interviewed in a BBC One documentary ‘When the Queen spoke to a nation’ about how The Queen used her speeches to communicate those values.

Professor Andrew Blick, Professor of Politics and Contemporary History, and Head of Department of Political Economy, was interviewed about the handover of power on Sky News, BBC Radio Wales and Euronews.

The succession is instantaneous. The moment one monarch's heart stops beating, the next person in line takes over.– Professor Andrew Blick, Head of the Department of Political Economy.

Professor Rosie Campbell, professor of politics and director of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL), was quoted in the The Washington Post about whether the Queen had represented a positive role model for female leadership.

On learning of the sad news about Her Majesty, GIWL chair and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard shared a statement praising Queen Elizabeth II as a remarkable role model and spoke about her as a global female leader during an episode of Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.

Dr Michelle Clement, Researcher in Residence at No.10 Downing Street and lecturer in The Strand Group and in the Department of Political Economy, highlighted the unique relationship between the monarch and UK Prime Ministers. She was quoted in The Times, did interviews on BBC Belfast, Good Morning Ulster and CBC Radio’s podcast, plus contributed to a piece on the Queen as 'the ultimate public servant'.

Dr Nigel Fletcher, Teaching Fellow in Politics and Contemporary History, was interviewed on LBC about constitutional issues and succession procedures. On the topic of King Charles III’s accession, he was also quoted by The New York Times, CBC Radio, News-24.fr and The Chicago Tribune, plus interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live and on LBC.

Professor Richard Drayton, Professor of Imperial and Global History, outlined in an interview with The World how he thinks King Charles III's role will be more focused on maintaining the monarchy for his successors.

Professor Andrew Roberts, visiting professor in the Department of War Studies, was interviewed on CNBC World about The Queen’s life and achievements.

And Dr David Jordan, Senior Lecturer in Defence Studies and Co-Director of the Freeman Air and Space Institute, reflected on BBC London about the close and important relationship The Queen had with the Armed Forces.

Professor David Edgerton, Hans Rausing Professor of the History of Science and Technology, wrote a piece for The Observer about the relationship between the Conservative Party and the monarchy. He was also quoted in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and cited in The New Statesman.

Professor Anand Menon, Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs, and Director of UK in a Changing Europe, was quoted in articles about challenges for the new King Charles III and whether the British public would accept the high costs of the Queen's State Funeral in The New York Times, The I and the Daily Express.

And following the State Funeral held on 19 September, Dr Steven Berryman, a Visiting Research Fellow in Music, wrote in the publication Arts Professional about how the ceremony showed the importance of music in the UK's cultural life.
