UCU is the trade union for higher education (HE) and further education (FE). We represent academics, researchers, teaching and professional service staff and have over 120,000 members in the UK.

The King's College London branch is one of the largest in the UK, with over 1900 members.

Visit the KCL UCU website to find out more.

We can support you individually with any workplace issue but also act collectively to negotiate with university management and improve conditions for everyone.

We support members by:

  • negotiating better pay and work benefits
  • campaigning to increase job security, respect in the workplace and opportunities for career progression
  • tackling bullying and discrimination
  • updating members via our blog and social media.

We believe that our working conditions are connected to working conditions globally and that it is possible to use our bargaining power to build solidarity with wider struggles against injustice and structural inequalities.

How we're organised

We’re a democratic organisation, governed according to the central UCU constitution and rulebook.

At our branch general meetings we share information on recent events, debate our strategy and decide union policies and representatives.

At the National UCU’s annual Congress, motions that bind the executive's policy are debated and voted upon.

Each branch has the right to send four delegates who can vote on motions on behalf of the branch.

Visit the National UCU website for more information.

Join UCU

A union’s strength comes from its members and we encourage every eligible staff member to join UCU at the earliest opportunity.

Visit the National UCU website to complete a membership form.

Please note that only limited support can be given within the first three months of your membership, particularly if you join with a pre-existing issue or an issue arises soon after joining.
