What is the PTES?

The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) is the only UK higher education sector-wide survey to gain insight from taught postgraduate students about their learning and teaching experience. Conducted in partnership with AdvanceHE, PTES gathers important information about the experience of any taught postgraduate student on a Masters, Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma course. This includes students studying our online and distance learning courses. PTES also considers students’ motivations for taking their programme and – where relevant – their experience of undertaking a dissertation or major project.

Why does the PTES matter?

PTES matters because it makes a tangible difference to the experience students have at university. By completing the survey, you can make it clear what you have enjoyed about your experience at King’s and what you think could have made it better. Last year, almost 4,000 King’s students shared their opinion. Your opinion is incredibly important to us, and we value the time you take sharing your thoughts.

As a result of previous feedback from PTES we have been able to improve various aspects of our students’ experience, including:

  • Scrapping the Cap, which reduced the penalty applied to late coursework submissions.
  • Improving our Mitigating Circumstances process, making evidence requirements more clear and proportionate.
  • Reducing our average counselling wait times from over 21 days in 2021-22 to under two weeks.
  • Enhancing our careers and employability support – we now offer Shortlist.me (a free video interview service) and CareerSet (a comprehensive CV checker powered by AI), which support your employability journey.

You can read more about how King’s and KCLSU are using student feedback to improve and enhance the experience of our students on our website.
